Interactive Atlas
Proportions of the Aesthetic Face
The 1984 atlas by Powell and Humphreys, rebuilt as an interactive tool for any clinician.
In 1984, Dr. Nelson Powell, Dr. Liu's mentor, published Proportions of the Aesthetic Face with Humphreys: a disciplined method for measuring facial balance, built on the premise that an individual structure acquires clinical meaning only through its relationship to the whole face. The atlas went out of print decades ago.
Dr. Liu has re-introduced it as an interactive atlas. Upload a lateral or frontal photograph, place the landmarks, and the angles, ratios, and proportions compute against the ideals in the atlas, each with a teaching note on what it means. Photographs are analyzed in the browser and never leave the device.
Best on a laptop or tablet. On a phone, it opens full screen.
An educational tool for facial analysis. The values are aesthetic guidelines, not diagnostic thresholds, and are not a substitute for clinical examination.
